For Services and Resources in French Polynesia

The Tahiti Cruisers Guide is brought to you by Julien Desmont from Xperimental and Chuck Houlihan from Jacaranda. Starting as an idea based on the very successful Panama City Cruisers guide, it has evolved into 200+ pages of information on vendors and services throughout French Polynesia. In January 2018, we added GPS coordinates and links to Google Maps to assist in locating businesses.

Downloading the guide and GPS map coordinates will facilitate using the guide offline. The coordinates will work for either Maps.me (best for Papeete) or Google Maps.

Especially thankful to John (SV Mary Ann II) and Steve (SV Ocean Star) for their huge effort in supplying a vast amount of information for the guide.

The guide is a community effort. Updates and new additions are greatly appreciated. If you find the guide useful or find something that needs updating please drop us a note at tahiticruisersguide (AT) gmail.com

11-2023 SV Flyer I have a great recommendation for an electrician(s) in Tahiti. Thomas Dumont and Alex Bono of Marine Supplies in Papeete just completed the installation of a Victron lithium battery upgrade on our 2007 Outbound 46, “Flyer.” It was an extensive electrical refit and they discovered several problems with the factory wiring which explains why we were having so many problems in charging our 600 ah array of AGMs on the crossing from Mexico to French Polynesia.

Not only does the new system charge more efficiently, but now with the installation of a Victron isolation transformer, we can connect to the 230 v shore power system which is a great convenience.

Most importantly, Thomas took the time to explain to me the details of the job every step of the way and he will be providing me a detailed diagram of the new system.

10-2023 SV Elvira We had work done by Marine supplies through both Thomas L and Alex. They are close by the Marina and did a professionals and fast work. They seem to be heavily booked, so try to make a reservation two weeks ahead. The shop has some really good stuff and are professionals in testing your marine electronics, such as Raymarine. We also found some good sheets to a good price there. They can also order Mastervolt parts

3-22 SV Swan In March of 2022, while I was at Papeete Marina, I noticed my neighbour was having a RADAR installed. Out of curiosity and need, I approached the electrician, Thomas, tentatively as he was obviously busy. He was very helpful and responsive to my request providing good advice.

Weeks later, I returned from sailing and asked Thomas for help with trouble-shooting. Even though he was busy, he still made time to answer my questions and then recommended his colleague Alex from MarinElec (phone number +689 87374715). I was very pleased with this help, and I would recommend Thomas DuMont, although be aware he is quite popular, so he might not be available immediately.

01-21 SV Cyrolia I bought Cyrolia, a 2010 Jeanneau 53 in December 2020. Starting in January, 2021, I have been working with Thomas who has been an excellent installer, upgrader and has been able to fix just about any electrical problem I have encountered. He has installed a new GEL battery bank, replaced my charger and inverter with a Victron system, is gradually replacing all my Raymarine with B&G electronics, installed my AIS, GPS and Iridium systems. And we are redesigning and creating a new electrical panel. Because he is good, professional, reliable and fair, he is busy and should be scheduled so that you can design the systems from a bigger picture perspective as much as possible vs being reactive with fixes and installs. I highly recommend Thomas and he will continue to be my electrician so long as I am in French Polynesia.

4-23 SV Freydis we found them to be very helpful giving good advice about new nav lights. Unfortunately the trilight we purchased was faulty but they refunded our money as they didn't have another in stock.

12-2022 SV Reva Reva
Had trouble with our watermaker in Tuamotos, and we contacted Alex. He was very helpfull, and knew what he was talking about. He helped us solve the problem over Whatsapp. For remote guidance on electronics, this is the guy to call.

10-22 SV ProfAsea Knowledgeable, Reliable, and there when you need him!

Recomended and installed charging system after trouble shooting charging issues.  (Solar, batteries, charger, etc.).

Raymarine expert:  bench tested and repaired our wind transducer saving us replacement costs.

On call: our autopilot quit functioning while crossing from Moorea to Taiatea.  We called Alex and he diagnosed the problem over the phone ( short in Linear drive clutch wiring), and explained to us, step by step, how to repair.  With Alex’s help, our auto pilot was again working and we were able to return to Tahiti with a fully functioning auto pilot!

Thank you Alex for all you do!!!

2-2022   SV Isis  First time at leaving a review for someone but felt compelled to inform people of my experience. I contacted Marine Electric to install our additional solar panels and victron controller. Alex was both efficient and tidy in his work manner and exceeded expectations. We then had an issue with our engine, we contacted Marine Electric again and Alex was immediately on hand to help out. When after an hour he informed us that the starter motor needed replacement there was no charge and he gave us great advice on who to contact to help with the issue. Marine Electric supply a great service and are highly knowledgeable Re yachts. I can highly recommend them if you have any electrical requirements.

2-22 SV CAPALL MARA After much deliberation and with a heavy heart, I must revise my entry on Alex of Marine Elec

He did a major Lithium Installation for us in October 2020. We went to
the Tuomotos shortly after. Alex answered various questions of mine
happily.

Early in 2021 I was ordering items from the US, I asked Alex to help
me and offered to pay him for his time.

When it came time to install the electronics, it was like a different
Alex. He was curt and distracted. His new trainee made several errors.
The upshot was that his actions damaged our vhf. I managed to get
replacement from the manufacturers but Alex became uncommunicative. He
started only answering my texts in French.

There were ongoing questions I had about the Lithium installation so
we employed another person who found several wiring mistakes ,that
could have damaged the lithium batteries.

I can no longer endorse Alex of Marinelec,.

9-21 SV Nuwam2
I would recommend Alex Marine Elec. Alex is currently installing a range of electronics on our boat. Alex is professional and his work is very good.

9-2021 SV Ipanema Very please with Marine Elec!

12-2020 SV September AM
Alex was able to attend to our navigation electronics problem at short notice, after another appointment was postponed.
He diagnosed quickly and was able to communicate in English. Professional.

11-2020 SV Sea Bear
We recently decided to change from our AGM/generator set up to solar panels and lithium batteries such that we could be totally off the grid and rarely rely on our generator. Alex from Marine Electric installed 5 x 330w solar panels, 3 x 200Ah lithium batteries and all of the monitoring equipment that goes with it. His work was carried out with utmost care to detail, and very professionally. We were so impressed with his work ethic and the quality of installation. When we have had a few questions after the installation was complete, he's always been very responsive and helpful. We love our new set up and would highly recommend Alex if anyone is considering upgrading as we did!

5-20 SV Notorious
Very competent, meeting stable, speaks good English and is mega fair.

5-20 SV Capall Mara
Alex is excellent

10-19 SV Counting Stars
Alexandre at Marine Elec in PPT fixed my generator wiring. He shows up on time, makes everything perfect and extremely fair with pricing.
